Pallippad Grama Panchayat: Geographical Features

Pallippad Grama Panchayat is a picturesque rural area located in the Karthikappally Taluk of Alappuzha District, Kerala. Situated adjacent to Haripad, the village is known for its unique geographical characteristics. The major geographical features of Pallippad Grama Panchayat are as follows:

1. Part of the Upper Kuttanad Region

Based on its geographical location, Pallippad falls within the Upper Kuttanad region. It is a low-lying plain situated at or slightly below sea level. Historically, Pallippad was regarded as one of the major rice-producing areas of the former Travancore State.

2. Water Bodies and the Achankovil River

One of the most significant geographical features of this Panchayat is its network of water bodies:

  • Achankovil River: The famous Achankovil River flows through Pallippad before entering Veeyapuram. The river enriches the soil and supports the area's fertile agricultural lands.
  • Canals and Streams: In addition to the main river, the region contains numerous canals, ponds, and small streams typical of the Kuttanad landscape, providing water connectivity with other parts of Alappuzha District.

3. Soil and Topography

  • Alluvial Soil: Owing to the presence of the Achankovil River, the area is predominantly covered with fertile alluvial soil, making it highly suitable for paddy cultivation.
  • Paddy Fields: Extensive paddy fields define the landscape of the Panchayat. Being a low-lying area, it is also susceptible to seasonal flooding during the monsoon.

4. Boundaries and Location

  • Pallippad is located adjacent to Haripad Town.
  • To its eastern and northern sides lie other parts of the Upper Kuttanad region, including Veeyapuram and Cheruthana.
  • Pallippad is easily accessible from National Highway 66 (NH 66) via Haripad.
